Title: The immunological consequences of Staphylococcus aureus exposure: Implications for the host, and therapeutic development.
BIOGRAPHY
Professor McLoughlin’s research into host-pathogen interactions has made a significant international impact and has directly informed development of next-generation anti-S. aureus vaccines. Her research focuses on understanding the host immune response to Staphylococccus aureus exposure with a particular focus on adaptive cellular immunity. This research has led to a paradigm shift in our understanding of the importance of cellular immunity in S.aureus infection, challenging the dogma surrounding the role of antibodies in protection against S. aureus infection and as result the field now accepts that anti-S. aureus vaccines must induce protective cellular in addition to humoral immunity. More recently her research has focused on understanding the immunological consequence of commensal S. aureus exposure and how this might impact upon vaccine efficacy and subsequent infection outcomes.
