Join Rise & Flourish for a unique 2-hour skills share workshop celebrating Refugee Week 2026 and exploring what it means to belong in Manchester.

Tuesday 16th June 2026 10:00 – 12:00 Venue Location: Arthur Lewis Common Room Link: https://share.google/P4hkr17U4VIIbRcby FREE | Tea & Coffee provided

Many people pass through and settle into our wonderful city but often questions of who belongs and who does not, particularly in this current political climate causes further rifts within our society, breaking down community links and commonalities, particularly around migration rhetoric. This year’s theme for Refugee Week is ‘courage’. Grassroots and lived experience-led food projects like Rise & Flourish set up bravely, working hard to welcome people from all timelines of belonging to Manchester, bringing people together to share their experiences of their lives and its connections to and across the city.

Clare & Hanane, previous directors of Heart & Parcel, and now Clare a Human Geography PhD student at SEED Manchester and Hanane the director of Rise & Flourish met through Heart & Parcel’s grassroots informal approach to learning English and quickly became friends, working side by side to support new arrivals (refugee, asylum seekers) and longer term migrants come together through food to connect, share experiences and make new experiences.

Who can come? Open to students and staff from all disciplines and members of local communities, this dynamic session brings people together through food, movement, and creative conversation creating an engaging space to connect, share, and learn from one another.

What to Expect Rise & Flourish work with people learning English from migrant communities using creative methods such as cooking, movement and art.

This lived experience led project will bring four members of their team from migrant backgrounds who have been working with Rise & Flourish and call Manchester their home to plan and prepare their skill workshops.

Expect 35-minute rotational workshops of food, crafting, poetry and movement, lots of reflection and exchange!

Each group will rotate between the different stations, spending 35 minutes at each activity.

Schedule Coffee & Welcome Rotational Workshops Food & Spices Crafting & Printing Food & Poetry Movement Refreshments, Feedback & Closing

It’s an opportunity to take part in something welcoming, inclusive, and genuinely collaborative. Come ready to share stories, exchange skills, meet new people and get a further insight into working and researching with communities within our city. Whether you’re new to Manchester or have lived here for years, you’ll leave with fresh perspectives, new connections, and (we hope!) a stronger sense of belonging in this vibrant city.
