Join us for a film screening of Sheril A. Bustaman’s Migrants: Joy, Rest & Celebration, a short film supported by the SEED Impact Fund and produced in collaboration with MIDEQ researchers – Dr Nadiah Ahmad (Monash), Prof Tanja Bastia (GDI) and Dr Matthew Walsham (GDI). The film looks at the activities of Nepali migrant workers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during Hari Raya Aidilfitri (known globally as Eid), the most celebrated public holiday in the Muslim-majority country. It follows their lives through a gendered lens, observing how migrant workers spend the national holiday placemaking and creating their own version of joy, rest and celebration.
Before the screening, Prof Tanja Bastia will give a short introduction to the wider context within which ideas for this film emerged, related to South-South, regional migration and gendered migrations from an intersectional perspective. Sheril Bustaman and Dr Nadiah Ahmad will then introduce the film and the migration context in Malaysia. There will be time for a Q&A after the screening.
