Art Garden Party.
How better to mark our nomination as Museum of the Year than with a gallery-wide garden party?
Join us on Saturday 6 June for a day of family activities, afternoon teas, picnics and live music – the perfect opportunity to make the most of the glorious early summer sunshine (we hope!).
Here’s what’s planned:
10am-12pm Outdoor Art Club: a workshop where families create new habitats for insects. Suitable for children aged 8 and up, free, booking essential (booking details released soon).
10am-4pm I Love You: with help from Hulme Community Garden Centre, recreate one of the Whitworth’s best known artworks – Peter Blake’s I Love You textile – in the art garden. Suitable for all ages, drop in, free.
11am-2pm Plant & Play: get planting in this hands-on activity that’s perfect for anyone interested in gardening. Suitable for all ages, drop in (Oxford Road entrance), free. Learn more.
2pm Museum of the Year Tour Join gallery staff at our parkside entrance as they lead a guided tour of the new Whitworth, and find out more about why we have been nominated. Suitable for all ages, drop in, free.
2.30pm-4.30pm Afternoon Tea: Our take on an afternoon tea, with edible art (heart-shaped biscuits you can decorate), picnic rugs, tea and juice – and somewhere to sit come rain or shine. Suitable for all ages, drop in, free.
2.30pm-3pm & 3.30pm-4pm Music Garden: Live funk, jazz and swing in the art garden from MUJO, the University of Manchester jazz orchestra. Suitable for all ages, drop in, free.
Please see separate listing for this evening event - Over 18s only:
8pm-late Garden Dance Party: One for the grown-ups: let your hair down and dance in the promenade that overlooks the art garden. Expect music from the Disco Mums, lanterns, in the art garden as night falls and late-night eats at the café in the trees.
Over 18s only, free but booking essential.
