The Birth of International Law Out of the Spirit of Political Theology
In times of experiencing an unpredicted war in Europe it is necessary to rethink political and legal theories of war and peace and their theological background.
The evening will be chaired by Dr Michael Hoelzl (The University of Manchester) we'll be joined by Professor Andrej Zwitter (University of Groningen) who will present a theo-political investigation on Hugo Grotius, the founding father of international law as we know it today. This lecture will discuss how Grotius’ work offers a contribution to a discourse on the enduring question of universal peace and just war beginning with St. Augustine and elaborated on by Immanuel Kant.
This evening will offer a unique opportunity to see the Rylands very rare first edition of Hugo Grotius’ ground-breaking work on war and peace De jure belli ac pacis libri tres of 1625 and other first editions of key works which laid the foundations of our contemporary understanding of war and peace.
Please join us from 5pm for a welcome drink followed by the Collection Encounter and lecture.
