The peripatetic themes in W.G. Sebald’s writings have been widely discussed and analysed since the German publication of Vertigo (Schwindel. Gefühle) in 1990. Through The Emigrants, The Rings of Saturn, and Austerlitz his work has presented the themes of migration, mobility and immobility in both subject, language, and form. In 2023, together with Clive Scott, Nick Warr edited Shadows of Reality: A Catalogue of Sebald’s Photographic Materials, and applied the theme of mobility to Sebald’s use of photographs in his work. Nick Warr comes to Manchester to discuss how this astonishing archive landed on his desk and the fifteen years of research and curation that followed. He talks about the nomadic in Sebald’s use of photographic material and shows rarely seen footage of Sebald discussing his work.
