Title: Deprivation and student progress in mathematics
Abstract: In this talk I will present recent data on deprivation and student progress in mathematics, particularly looking at the key transition points of students choosing to do A Level maths and students choosing to do a degree in maths. I'll also give a brief summary of initiatives that are taking place to try and counter this. It wouldn't be much fun if we didn't actually do some maths - so I'll bring some examples of activities designed to promote some of the elements of 'Maths Mastery' (an approach that is being promoted in maths teachers from primary and beyond) and some questions showing the evolution of a topic from GCSE through A Level to University admissions tests!
