Title: From infinitely many to just a handful: representations of symmetric
groups.
Abstract: One of the most important open problem in the representation
theory of the symmetric group in positive characteristic p is finding the decomposition numbers; i.e., the multiplicity of the simple modules as composition factors of the Specht modules (the p-modular reductions of the irreducible complex representations). The weight associated to a Specht module is a good measure of the complexity of its representation theory, and not much is known for modules of weight greater than 3. We will survey briefly the rich interplay between representation theory and combinatorics of integer partitions, combining several important results in the literature on decomposition numbers that allow us to reduce the Specht modules of a given weight to be studied to a finite subset. We discuss then the fruitfulness of this technique in the study of representations of weights 3 and 4.
