Last year we raised the question:
"Considering the disproportionate impact of the criminal justice system upon African Caribbean men, why are so few of our young men going to university to study law?"
Join us to discuss what the Black Lawyers Matter team has been doing in the last year to address this question, and for the launch of our brand new Lemn Sissay Law Bursaries.
We will be joined by leading black legal professionals, academics and community organisers including the Chancellor of the University Lemn Sissay, barrister Tunde Okewale, senior lecturer Dr Dawn Edge and Kyle Blackburn of the Black Solicitors Network.
In light of recent events locally, we will also be facilitating a collective conversation on how lawyers can assist and empower communities to:combat the recent rise in violence; challenge cuts to services; influence the role of the police; and work to make our communities safer for all.
To discuss these questions we will be joined by leading legal experts, members of the Greater Manchester Black and Asian Police Association alongside Manchester based youth workers and musicians for what promises to be an interesting and lively debate.
This is also an opportunity to get expert advice and support on: making an application to the University; working at the University; and accessing our cultural institutions. Representatives from our community partners will also be present to provide information on their work in the local area.
This event is free and open to all.
