Join staff, students and the local community in marking Black History Month 2018
On Wednesday 3 October, come along to University Place for the University’s event for Black History Month, ‘Brilliant and BAME’.
This year’s event will recognise and celebrate the significant contribution that people from BAME backgrounds have made to Manchester and Britain. SuAndi, local-born poet and writer and our keynote speaker, will be discussing this theme.
Staff and students will be speaking about projects which promote equality, diversity and inclusion as part of the University Showcase. A series of lightening talks will include The Works, the Diversity ambassadors scheme, the University’s latest submission for the Race Equality Charter Mark, and what the Students Union are doing to support race equality.
Between 12-2pm, there will be more opportunities and initiatives to find out about in the main exhibition outside University Place and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre and the John Rylands University Library will have displays from their archives.
To make this a real celebration, there will be live music from local artists, street food stalls and an art exhibition.
We will have our University and Students’ Union joint project Speak Up Stand Up launching their first event of the year, the Speak Up! Stand Up! Emotive Art Exhibition, which will take place in the University Place Drum.
Register on Eventbrite for a place at the talks:
