Hallé St Peter's welcomes the Klezmorim of Manchester for a toetapping evening of freshly arranged music and traditional klezmer dance. Join us at Hallé St Peter’s for an evening of (optional) participatory dance led by Judith Plowman and Adrian Dobson. Dance the night away to a selection of bulgars, freylekhs, horas, and khosidls performed by the Klezmorim of Manchester dance band. And then rest your feet for interludes featuring Klezmer Klassica's crossover repertoire. The Halle's Chris Emerson (viola/violin) joins both the dance band and Klezmer Klassica for this klezmer evening in this striking Hallé venue in Ancoats. With pastries from Salford's famous Brackman's Bakery, this is an opportunity to put your left and right foot into the world of klezmer, the musical and dance cultures of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, as they might have been for weddings back in the day. Try out a dance or two from this inter-generational, communal dance culture, or simply sit back and listen to this rich crossover of musical tradition. There is also the opportunity to have a dance lesson before the main event, should you wish to learn some dance steps.

The evening is jointly organised by the Halle and Modalways, a community-interest company led by the leaders of The University of Manchester Klezmer Ensemble, Richard Fay and Daniel Mawson. Modalways delivers intercultural music concerts (e.g. Amid the Mirk over the Irk, Klezmer Klassica, and Vessels of Song), dances, education, and reminiscence events in order to promote better intercultural understanding, give back to the local community, and to provide work/experiences for musicians of all levels.

Local dance leaders Judith Plowman and Adrian Dobson lead the immersive klezmer dance experience to the beats of the Klezmorim of Manchester, a collective of local klezmer aficionados (including alumni of the university's klezmer ensemble), joined for this evening by the Hallé's Chris Emerson who has worked with the klezmer students over the years to develop their performance skills and enhance their musicianship. Chris also performs with Klezmer Klassica, a Modalways project exploring the Jewish musical inspiration from works by lesser-known composers like Joseph Achron, to concert favourites like Shostakovich, as well more recent compositions by living klezmer composers across the pond and klezmer-inspired pieces by local composers.

This event is supported by The University of Manchester Humanities Strategic Civic Engagement Fund, with refreshments provided by Brackmans Bakery in Salford.
