Weinberg Quartet No. 5 in B flat, Op. 27
Weinberg Quartet No. 6 in E minor, Op. 35
The five-movement Fifth Quartet and the six-movement Sixth are products of the extraordinary flowering of Weinberg’s chamber music during his first years in Moscow, from 1944 to 1946.
The Danels were the first to perform the complete 17 quartets of Mieczyslaw Weinberg, here at the University in November 2009. Since then, the have taken the cycle all over the world, and while others have recorded the quartets, their CPO set remains the benchmark.
Following a decade away from the string quartet, Weinberg returns with three of his most masterful creations, embracing and new brands of experimentation, personal lyrical introspection and furious energy, all composed in close dialogue with Shostakovich.
‘Amazing classical music concert. Quatuor Danel plays all of this music magnificently’ David Hurwirtz, Classics Today
