This event has two speakers who will talk about fundraising and campaigning in large organisations. They will highlight their experiences and personal, ethical, practical and logistical challenges when working in humanitarian and non-humanitarian contexts, and discuss the similarities and differences between the two settings.
The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) Speaker Series is a regular student-focused forum that draws on the expertise of a range of practitioners, academics and researchers both within HCRI and more widely, covering a broad range of humanitarian-related issues and contexts.
The Speaker Series provides an opportunity to learn from and interact with scholars and practitioners in an informal and intimate environment in order to gain insights from people's own experiences. Speakers
Rowena Harding
Role: Freelance fundraiser and campaigner
Biography: Rowena has been working as a communication professional in non profit, public sector and government contexts since 2001, specialising in behaviour and policy change. She has worked for the NGOs ActionAid International and VSO, campaigning organisation Avaaz and with various governments.
James Lester
Role: Fundraiser and Event Manager
Organisation: Manchester United Foundation, the charity arm of Manchester United Football Club.
Biography: James has managed a diversity of major fundraising projects for both the Manchester United Foundation and the Club. This includes the Club’s most prestigious events, such as the annual United for Unicef Gala Dinner and the Player of the Year Awards, the biennial charity legends matches at Old Trafford, which have become the main source of income for the Manchester United Foundation, raising over £1.7m so far. To help with increasing the interest in football related fundraising, James recently worked with the Premier League to host the first Fundraising in Football conference, which brought together clubs from around the UK to share best practice, build relationships and explore new fundraising ideas.
