About the book:
No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. In this monumental new book, Sven Beckert situates its story within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework. Born global-emerging from merchant communities across Asia, Africa, and Europe—capitalism's radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually before bursting onto the world scene. Decentring the European perspective, Beckert highlights agency, resistance, innovation, and ruthless coercion around the world, from the age of empire through to the rise of Asian economies today.
