The School of Environment, Education and Development Annual Social Responsibility Lecture

Fairtrade is celebrating its 30th anniversary in the UK. When consumers buy Fairtrade labelled goods, they are supporting farmers and workers to improve their living standards, invest in their communities and businesses, and protect the shared environment. This is achieved by paying fair prices and upholding fair production standards and practices across global supply chains for tea, coffee, chocolate, and many more products.

From small beginnings, Fairtrade is now an international movement working in partnership with 2 million farmers and workers across 70 countries. The University of Manchester is a Fairtrade University: it supports a vision of a world in which all producers enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfil their potential, and have control over their future.

Join us for an event to celebrate Fairtrade’s 30th Anniversary. Four expert speakers will reflect on the achievements and challenges of the Fairtrade movement to date, and discuss the future of the movement and how you can get involved. Fairtrade refreshments will be served from 1pm in the foyer of Humanities Bridgeford Street before the panel session begins.

Speakers:

  • Mike Gidney, CEO, Fairtrade Foundation
  • Emily Pearce, Senior Sustainable Sourcing & International Development Manager, Co-op
  • Joanna Abena Fianu, Chair, Fairtrade Lancashire
  • Stephanie Barrientos, Emeritus Professor, Global Development Institute
