This core workshop introduces one of the most practised methods in the study of texts. Textual analysis is intended as a tool which engenders readings. The workshop provides postgraduates working with texts an overview of textual analysis approaches, examples of how to use textual analysis in Arts research, as well as a range of analytical techniques and some hands-on practice on close textual reading.
Participants are engaged through practical exercises carried out in groups, which ask students to critically approach a selected text, providing for a methodological analysis.
The workshop opens up with some general questions on the meaning and practice of textual forms that is meant to start up discussion on textual analysis. Two further exercises require participants to think about good and bad practices of textual analysis. The workshop ends with asking participants to provide their own reading of a selected text that incorporates the methodological approach offered throughout the workshop.
