Despite being an ancient and widespread practice in Irish culture, autobiography has received far less critical attention than the nation’s poetry, drama and prose fiction. This lecture will examine the self-representational practices that typify the genre of Irish autobiography and analyse how influential modern writers from W.B. Yeats to Nuala O’Faolain have negotiated the tensions between inherited and innovative ways of scripting the self. The lecture’s coverage will include a focus on the dilemmas of identity and belonging expressed in the autobiographical writings of authors of Irish birth and heritage in Britain.
The event will start at 5.00pm in the Lecture Theatre, Samuel Alexander Building and there will be an opportunity to speak with Professor Harte at a reception following the lecture.
It would be helpful for catering purposes, if you could let me (Bethany.pedder@manchester.ac.uk) know if you will be attending.
