Join us for “Cognitivist to Social Constructivist Feedback – Developing the Interplay Between Staff and Student Assessment Literacy”, led by Karen Beswick.
Date: 25 February 2025
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:45 PM
Location: Ellen Wilkinson Building, Room B2.4
About the workshop: The notion of students as partners can provide a collaborative space for students and staff to work together within a framework of shared responsibilities. Towards completion of a two-year fellowship with the Institute of Education focusing on assessment feedback literacy, this workshop, led by Karen Beswick, encourages discussion around typical assessment feedback from cognitivist terms where markers give information about strengths and weaknesses of student work and how it can be improved to a process-orientated social constructivist view of feedback where feedback processes involve students as active generators of their own understandings in using feedback from teachers (or lecturers) to guide their development. Participants will have an opportunity to look at marking feedback examples, reflect on existing practices, and hear from a student intern on how UG students perceive feedback. Suggestions and discussions will be collaboratively developed to consider how we can move towards feedback that enables students to develop their assessment literacy and in turn act decisively on the advice given, lessening marker workload. This workshop is suitable for New and experienced academics, and colleagues with an interest or involvement in marking and assessment.
