Professionalism is not something students simply arrive with—it’s something they develop through guidance, reflection, and meaningful engagement. This interactive workshop explores how educators can effectively support students in understanding, practicing, and embodying professionalism within their disciplines and future workplaces.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with practical strategies, discussion tools, and renewed confidence to help students connect professional values with their academic learning and career aspirations, building the next generation of reflective, responsible, and professional graduates.
Note: This workshop is aimed at those who teach or support learning on professionally regulated courses: MBChB; MBChB Graduate Entry Medicine; BSc Oral Health Science; BDS; and Physician Associate programmes);BNurs; BMidwif; MPharm; BSc/MSci Optometry; BSc Speech and Language Therapy; BSc Healthcare Science (Audiology); MA Social Work; MSc/PGDip Deaf Education; MSc Clinical Science (Neurosensory Sciences); and ClinPsyD programmes, Applied Mental Health / PgCert Approved Mental Health Professional Practice, Primary Mental Health Care
Intended learning outcomes of the session:
- Recognise the importance of enhancing student understanding of ‘professionalism’.
- Explain how the FBMH ‘Professionalism’ Guidance and UPP could be utilised to promote student understanding of concepts/issues within your setting.
- Identify and discuss common issues/problems related to student professionalism in your area.
- Explain how the values of professionalism underpin and support Concern Review Panel (CRP) / Fitness to Practise (FtP) processes.
- Propose additional content for the University Professionalism Partnership website.
- Create a personal plan of action to enhance student understanding of professional requirements within your programme.
