Tyndall Manchester invite you to attend the following seminar on "Priorities for UK adaptation to climate change" by Professor Richard Betts MBE, on Thursday 9th February at 12.30pm.

This is a hybrid seminar, you are welcome to join in-person in Engineering A_2A.013 at The University of Manchester or via Zoom.

How unprepared is the UK for a changing climate?

The UK is extremely poorly prepared for climate change. This is the conclusion of the 3rd Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA3) published in 2021, based on a comprehensive study of numerous current and potential climate change impacts and the extent of adaptation plans. CCRA3 assessed the magnitude of UK climate risks (and a few opportunities) and the urgency of adaptation in the categories of Natural Environment and Assets; Infrastructure; Health, Communities and Built Environment; Business and Industry; and International Dimensions. The overall conclusion was that there are substantial shortfalls in adaptation across all sectors. This talk describes the methodology for assessing risk magnitude and adaptation urgency, discusses the results and conclusions across the risk categories, and provides some thoughts on research needs to inform future assessments.

Speaker Bio

Professor Richard Betts MBE is Head of Climate Impacts Research at the Met Office Hadley Centre and Chair in Climate Impacts at the University of Exeter. He has worked in climate science since 1992, developing and applying Earth System Models, and founded the Met Office’s research activities into the impacts of climate change. He has published over 130 scientific papers on a wide range of topics including the global carbon cycle, wildfire, glaciers, drought, flooding, and human heat stress. Richard has served as a lead author on the 4th, 5th and 6th Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and led the Technical Report for the UK’s 3rd National Climate Change Risk Assessment. In 2019 he was appointed as an MBE for Services to Understanding Climate Change.
