Summary: This workshop proposes to explore the relationships between the State, the Church and the indigenous peoples of Ecuador through the management of knowledge, words, image and sound. The workshop begins with the presentation of three short films that together constitute a poetic video essay that raises questions about knowledge, kinship, and the power of the word in the contexts of museums, travel literature, and academic ethnography. In the films, María Clara Sharupi Juá tells her story in Spanish and the indigenous Shuar language. Her story was filmed by Ecuadorian artist Fabiano Kueva in the summer of 2022. Also participating in the presentation is Ana María Durán Calisto, Ecuadorian architect, urban planner, educator and writer. After the film screening, Ecuadorian historian María Elena Bedoya offers some comments on the films before opening the workshop to public debate.
In a second part of the workshop, three anthropologists (Natalia Valdivieso, Jérémie Voirol, and Joe Quick), present brief presentations on various topics that have to do with challenges to the dominance of the State and its extractivist and neoliberal agenda: the ecotheological proposal of missionaries in the northern Amazon of the country; the way young Otavalo rappers use their music to promote a certain vision of indigeneity; and the criticism expressed by Kichwa artists of the State's handling of the pandemic. Then there will be an open space for discussion with the public.
