OPENING NIGHT: Tuesday 4 October, 7pm – 9pm. With a talk by Architects for Social Housing on estate demolition and strategies to resist it, and an introduction to the exhibition by Nick Thoburn (University of Manchester). Free, all welcome.
An exhibition of photographs recording the lives of residents at Robin Hood Gardens in the estate's last years before demolition. The fate of this 'streets in the sky' development has long been fashion by the baleful metaphors of 'sink estate' and 'concrete monstrosity', wherein residents are alloted only cliched roles.
Against such representations, and the social cleansing agenda they serve, Kois Miah's images chronicle the complex lives, emotions, and routines that animate this extraordinary Brutalist council estate by pioneering British architects Alison and Peter Smithson.
In these photographs, people and place, architecture and home are interlaced, as the concrete forms and changed voids of Robin Hood Gardens project a vitality at the edge of destruction.
