Learning Objectives:
- An understanding of the role and responsibilities of the MPTS and how it differs from that of the GMC;
- The process by which allegations are investigated and, if appropriate, referred to the MPTS;
- An overview of recent changes, including regulation of non-doctors and the latest edition of Good Medical Practice;
- An understanding of the decision making methodology and sanctions banding utilised by Tribunals.
Angela Georgiou is a barrister practicing from Cobden House Chambers in Manchester. She was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in 1997.
Angela specialises in serious personal injury and clinical negligence litigation, representing both Claimants and Defendants (and their insurers!).She has an excellent understating of the medical issues arising in complex cases, including cases where there are difficult causation issues where careful but confident handling of medical experts is required. Angela regularly accepts instructions to appear at Coroner’s Inquests, including Jury and Article 2 inquests. As well as her personal injury practice, Angela has a keen interest in regulatory matters. For many years she has advised Chief Constables in police disciplinary matters, and she has been sitting as a Legally Qualified Chair for the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service since 2022.
