Speaker: Jan Nederveen Pieterse, University of California Santa Barbara

What is the problem, Trump or the United States? American media talk about Trump nonstop, but what about frailties of the US? Are the frailties structural? The headline ‘The White House is undoing 80 years of American Greatness’ (Graff, New York Times 17.8.25) is off beam. What about 80 years of cold war propaganda and bipartisan deception? Is the problem populism or authoritarian conservatism? Is the issue culture, or civilization?

Jan Nederveen Pieterse is Distinguished Professor of Global Studies and Sociology at University of California, Santa Barbara. He specializes in globalization, development studies and global political economy. He was previously at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, University of Amsterdam, National University of Malaysia, Maastricht University and Freiburg University. He is author or co/editor of 30 books. Recent books are Connectivity and Global Studies (2020), Covid-19 and Governance (2021), Multipolar globalization (2018), and Globalization and culture (2026, fifth edition).
