Teaching Matters began in MIE (TEPL) and now welcomes everyone to share HE teaching practice across SEED and Humanities. Each workshop blends theoretical insight with practical tools for effective teaching, learning and assessment. We hope this is useful for professional learning generally and particularly supportive for colleagues working on HNAP and/or Advance HE fellowships.
About the workshop: Students entering higher education face a transition in their studying and assessments experience, moving away from knowledge acquisition towards the demonstration of higher order cognitive skills such as synthesising information and critical thinking (Wong & Chui, 2020). As students need to feel competent and confident in understanding what they need to do to successfully undertake assessments (Wilkinson, 2024) it is important that we effectively scaffold students in developing these higher order cognitive skills. This workshop will provide guidance and tips on how to create a student checklist to help scaffold students through the assessment process. This workshop is suitable for all colleagues, new and experienced academics with an interest or involvement in effective assessment design and implementation.
