As we move into the warmer months, it’s pleasantly surprising to see the amount of life we have on campus! Perhaps you’ve already spotted few things this year.
The Michael Smith Quad is a fantastic habitat designed to enhance biodiversity. You may have read that we have Bee Orchids, frogs, birds and more (see blog: https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/bmh-sr/2023/09/04/supporting-urban-biodiversity-the-michael-smith-quad/). We’ve slowly developed the area with natural hedging, pond clearing, wildflower meadows and grow-your-own beds for those green fingered amongst us. It’s a beautiful space to grab lunch, have a chat or just take a break for the hard work you’ve been doing and so we’re keen to make it the best it can be.
We want biodiversity to be at the heart of this area and for everyone to appreciate it.
For this, we carry out Bioblitzes: These are snapshots events during which we identify species of plants, invertebrates, birds present in an area.
You do NOT need any experience. We will use the INaturalist app (or SEEK if you prefer it) to help us identify species. It’s easy and fun and you can do it in any places, at any time. There is no need to sign up, just come along on the day!
