Title: Rayleigh vs. Marangoni in multi-component droplet dynamics
Abstract: In multi-component liquid systems, differences in volatilities or solubilities can induce compositional gradients, which in turn can drive Marangoni flow due to a difference in surface tension and Rayleigh convection as a consequence of a composition-dependent mass density.
In this talk, several problems are addressed where an interplay of both of these mechanisms leads to intriguing phenomena.
This includes e.g. a submerged oil droplet levitating in a stratified ethanol-water gradient, which can undergo a Hopf-bifurcation to a highly non-linear jumping behaviour, and the possibility to control the flow in sessile binary droplets, which can be utilized in applications like e.g. inkjet printing.
The numerical results are based on the finite element library oomph-lib, wrapped in a Lua or Python API with a JIT compiler for the governing equations in weak form. The results are furthermore substantiated with experimental findings.
