This online seminar is aimed at researchers who are interested in learning about the different ways fiction relates to social science research. Drawing on Becky and Leah's recently published book, Fiction and Research: A Guide to Connecting Stories and Inquiry (2024, Policy Press), we will explore how social science and fiction can work together, and will introduce the ways in which other researchers have achieved this.

We explore three common theoretical underpinnings and rationales for researchers who combine research and fiction: stories as fundamental to human experience, concerns regarding ‘representation’ and fiction as speculation. We then examine the different ways in which researchers have used fiction including to ‘think with’, to share and communicate research, and creative methods, illustrated with examples from Becky and Sudip.
