About this event:

The 'Beyond the Creative City: Manchester' workshop brings together early career and senior researchers whose work is in and on the creative and cultural industries to discuss creative and cultural placemaking, city-regions and ‘left behind’ places. This half-day workshop aims to explore through presentation of work in progress and informal discussion what happens ‘beyond the creative city’ in endemic and post-Covid urban spaces.

Part of a new research network formed by the universities of Manchester, Melbourne and Toronto, we will be looking through a range of inter- and cross-disciplinary lenses at places and policy approaches that both coalesce and challenge the highly influential paradigm of the ‘Creative City’ as a strategic factor in urban planning, reproduced and transferred world-wide. The Covid-19 pandemic has generated further challenges to the Creative City model, by disrupting business models of CCIs and creating new creative geographies, hollowing out city centres, and increasing precarity, inequity, hybrid-working and a return to hyper-local. The network invites interdisciplinary researchers to establish new paradigms through research and knowledge exchange, agenda-setting, policy engagement, digital and peer-reviewed outputs.

We welcome the participation of researchers working in this area. Please note there are limited places for this event

Organisers: Dr Claire Burnill-Maier, Dr Abigail Gilmore, Institute for Cultural Practices / AHRC Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre
