Mechanisms reinforcing and countering religious segregation in schools: Network processes involving friendship and dislike ties.

In many social settings, subgroups emerge which are characterized by positive ties inside the subgroup and negative ties between these subgroups. In school settings, these subgroups might be based on a range of characteristics, such as gender, ethnicity or religion. This paper explores how religious segregation evolves over time, and whether there are processes that might reinforce segregation based on friendship and dislike, while we also consider processes that might reduce such segregations. We use data among 1,678 12-year-old children in 17 German schools. Our results provide support for processes that reinforce, as well as for processes that countering segregation.
