Title: Unique factorisation in power series rings
Abstract: Let R be a unique factorisation domain (UFD). It is well known that the polynomial ring RX is also a UFD, but the same does not apply to the power series ring RX. In 1961, Samuel constructed a Noetherian UFD R such that RX does not satisfy unique factorisation, prompting the question, when can RX be proved to be a UFD? It was conjectured by Landweber in 1974 that this is true if R is the ring of polynomials in infinitely many variables, but he could only prove a graded version. In this talk, I will outline our new and completed proof of the full conjecture, realising it as a corollary to a more general theorem about approximation of factorisations in RX. This work is joint with Elad Paran.
