University of Manchester Professor Emerita Carol Mavor returns to campus as the 2023-2024 Pilkington Visiting Professor in Art History. She will deliver a trio of lectures as well as a writing seminar sponsored by the Centre for New Writing.
Carol Mavor's books include, among others: Pleasures Taken: Performance of Sexuality and Loss in Victorian Photographs (1995); Becoming: The Photographs of Clementina, Viscountess, Hawarden (1999); Reading Boyishly: J.M. Barrie, Roland Barthes, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Marcel Proust and D.W. Winnicott (2007); Black and Blue: The Bruising Passion of Camera Lucida, La Jetée, Sans Soleil and Hiroshima mon amour (2012); Blue Mythologies: Reflections on a Colour (2013); Aurelia: Art and Literature Through the Mouth of the Fairy Tale (2017); and, most recently, Like a Lake. A Story of Uneasy Love and Photography (2020). Grayson Perry, writing in the Guardian, described Mavor's work as a 'thrilling mix of philosophy, photography, biography and much more'.
