Population ageing and the numerous crises faced by Western democratic states over recent decades are societal challenges demanding social scientists’ attention since they raise questions about how democracies facilitate their citizens’ civic engagement and support later-life active citizenship. Although awareness on the need for these topics’ research is rising, and policymakers recognise later-life civic engagement can increase societies’ abilities to manage population ageing, research on these areas remains severely lacking.

Against this backdrop, a recently completed interdisciplinary research project was designed: CIVEX, funded under the Joint Programming Initiative “More Years, Better Lives”. Principal Investigator Rodrigo Serrat (University of Barcelona) and Sandra Torres (Uppsala University) led the team collecting 240 lifecourse interviews with four groups of older people susceptible to civic exclusion in four European countries (15 per group and country, so 60 per group from Spain, Belgium, Sweden, and Finland). One group comprised older adults residing in urban neighbourhoods deemed disadvantaged by national standards.

This lecture presents the current state of later-life civic engagement research, urban studies-relevant data, and participants’ survey responses regarding their socio-demographic and participatory characteristics, offering insights into how neighbourhood-related characteristics impact civic engagement and how the potential of ageing societies could be unleashed to facilitate older-age active citizenship.

Tea and Coffee will be provided.
