Abstract: Research into personal networks has traditionally focused on core networks - the set of an individual's most intimate and supportive ties -, because these are supposed to affect individuals' health and well-being most. However, while each non-intimate tie may affect individuals less than each intimate tie, together, the hundreds of non-intimate ties still affect individuals through multiple mechanisms, such as by informing individuals about the state of society, thereby shaping their political opinions. Nonetheless, individuals' broader acquaintanceship networks are much more difficult to measure than core networks. In this talk, I will discuss the results from the BRIDGES study conducted in Spain at the end of 2021. The project used a novel methodology to map individuals' broader acquaintanceship networks, giving new insights into their composition, structure, and functioning. I will describe the inter-individual variation in the properties of acquaintanceship networks and relate it to one particular outcome, namely political opinions on economic redistribution and social insurance.

Biography: Miranda Lubbers is Associate Professor in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) and Director of the COALESCE Lab. She is an elected Acadèmia fellow of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). Her research concerns the networked mechanisms of social cohesion, social exclusion, and polarization. Lubbers was awarded the European Research Council's Advanced Grant for the project “A Network Science Approach to Social Cohesion in European Societies” (2021-2026) and her other current research projects are funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.
