We are delighted to announce the forthcoming Inaugural Lecture of Professor Timothy Burnett, which will take place on Monday 4 September 2023, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

The lecture will be held in Lecture Theatre A (2A.040), located on the Second Floor of Engineering Building A. We kindly request you sign up via Eventbrite.

Following the lecture, a luncheon will be hosted, commencing at 12:30 PM. The luncheon will be held in Engineering Building A, Ground Floor, Dining Area GA.058 (Behind Collaborate Café / Blended Lecture Theatre GA.056). If you have any dietary requirements, please inform us in advance.

Lecture Abstract

In this talk I will describe my research career so far including some of my major scientific and personal milestones. I hope to convey how my career path was not a straight line but the result of opportunities, circumstances and difficulties along the way. For scientific research I will describe how microscopy and characterisation became a passion for me and despite the materials and applications changing this has remained central to my research. I will describe how this enabled my transition from multiferroic materials research to degradation of engineering metals. I will then tell the story of developing correlative tomography and my research into the environmentally induced cracking of aluminium alloys.

Biography

Tim completed his MEng and PhD at the University of Leeds, UK in Materials Science and Engineering. He completed his thesis entitled ‘Growth and Characterisation of bismuth ferrite lead titanate single crystals’ in 2008 before starting as a Materials Physicist at The National Physical Laboratory in Teddington. Tim then joined FEI Company but was based at The University of Manchester building the metals lab collaboration working on Xenon Plasma FIB technology and linking 3D X-ray and electron microscopy based imaging techniques. In 2015 Tim joined the academic staff at Manchester as a Lecturer in Materials Imaging.

Since then Tim has developed correlative tomography linking different 3D and 4D imaging techniques as well as leading research into environmentally induced cracking of aluminium alloys. Since 2020 Tim has been Director of the National Research Facility in lab X-ray computed tomography which is a partnership between Manchester, Southampton, UCL, Warwick and Diamond. So far it has delivered over 1500 days of beam day access and trained over 300 researchers.
