The stylistic dating of the unique copy of the first edition of the blockbook Apocalypse (Rylands 3103) placed it around 1425. In 1965/66 Allan Stevenson offered instead, using the watermark method, a dating of 1450-52. At a stroke the oldest blockbook became a generation younger, exactly contemporary with Gutenberg’s typographic Bible. Yet Stevenson worked by eye, and before Gerhard Piccard transformed the study of watermarks; he was also only able to identify one of the paper stocks in the Apocalypse blockbook. Sixty years after Stevenson visited Manchester, what can we learn from new imaging about ‘the oldest European printed book’? Please join us online to hear Dr Stephen Mossman and Rylands Imaging specialist Tony Richards discussing this fascinating area of imaging technology and its influence on current research.
