The symphonic repertoire of the early-twentieth century is characterized by explicit depictions of the individual within the world surrounding it, evident in both Nielsen’s Helios Overture and Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony. Karelia Suite by Sibelius captures traditional Finnish folk music in this memorable suite. Come and join us for this Scandinavian adventure.

The great extent to which both Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen drew on nationalist enthusiasm at the beginning of the twentieth century, embedding it into many of their works, is demonstrated in the works performed tonight. Join Professor David Fanning for a pre-concert talk, discussing Sibelius' and Nielsen's roles in forging individual national identities through music; and why a recognition of such detail is crucial in understanding the motivations, styles, and wider preoccupations of composers at the beginning of the twentieth century. This discussion draws on the relevance of nationalistic impulses through their music, and how this was effectively illustrated in their works.
