Reproducing Security Markets: Accounting for the Household in the Global Recruitment of Nepali Global Security Workforce
Amanda Chisholm (Newcastle University)
Abstract: This paper is a feminist political economy exploration into the role militarised households play in broader global recruitment of Nepali workforces in private security. In this paper I argue that Nepalese security contractors are not only desirable in the global security industry because of their martial race histories—forged through over 200 years of military service on behalf of the British empire, but also because of uneven economic geographies and the seemingly unfettered support the families take on to sustain existing security labour practices. Building upon the emerging work within critical military studies on the military household, and drawing upon ethnographic work with security contractor wives throughout Nepal, this paper demonstrates the everyday activities wives do from making important financial decisions to teaching their children to know and love their fathers. I thusly highlight the entanglements of militarism and global capitalism in shaping the security migrant family home and demonstrate the patriarch and militarised bargains these women are compelled to make.
