An important part of the University's research strategy is for us to achieve recognition by EPSRC and NCSC (the National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ) as an Academic Centre of Excellence (ACE-CSR) for research in digital trust and security. This is part of a wider, interdisciplinary approach that the President is supporting including the recruitment of a chair and scholarships in digital trust and security (with significant activity in 'cyber').
The criteria for acceptance as an ACE are strict but the rewards for its achievement are tangible. ACE-CSR is the national benchmark for HEI research in this area and provides a direct route into the £1.9bn of funding attached to the government’s 5-year National Cyber Security Strategy.
The work to prepare an application for accreditation starts in earnest with this workshop. Significant work has already gone into mapping our current strengths across the University in the broad area of digital trust and security and scoping out what we need to do in order to present our portfolio of research for accreditation as an ACE-CSR. We now need participants from across the University to join the workshop and help identify the portfolio of relevant staff, research capabilities, research activity etc we can put forward and help to shape the strategy and vision for the ACE.
We are looking for input from:
- Engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists (e.g. considering protected and resilient technologies by design).
- Psychologists and social scientists (e.g. research on coping with accidental and malicious behaviours in a digital setting).
- Colleagues from law (e.g. frameworks of law to reduce the opportunities for malicious actors to behave with impunity).
- Political scientists … and others working in the area of digital trust and security.
Fourteen institutions have ACE-CSR status and many in government and academia have expressed surprise that the University of Manchester has not yet put itself forward for accreditation. Given the growing interest in Manchester from GCHQ and NCSC, we believe that a strong application from UoM would be very positively received.
Food and refreshments will be provided.
