In this presentation Professor Marlene Laruelle (George Washington University) will discuss the rise of Russian ethnonationalism as framed by the so-called 'national-democrat' movement and in particular the blogger and opposition figure Alexei Navalny. She will explore the growing interrelation emerging between Russian ethnonationalism and anti-Putin's regime statements, and the mobilizing potential of this new political combination. She will investigate how a rising identification with Europe and an increased influence for European patterns of framing national identity around xenophobia is influencing the Russian political landscape.
