The Russian Revolution shook the world in 1917. Its circumstances and consequences have been debated ever since. In this roundtable, senior and junior scholars at the University of Manchester will discuss why the Revolution is still important for their study of Russia’s past and present, and how the event looms in the background of their respective topics. The roundtable will highlight what links the Russian Revolution with the study of Russian media, Russian nationalism and international relations. These topics will be introduced by:
Vera Tolz, Sofia Tipaldou, Vitaly Kazakov, Stephen Hutchings, and Philipp Casula
The roundtable will be followed by the screening of one of the most popular Soviet films of the 1970s, «White Sun of the Desert» (with English subtitles): «A soldier of the Red Army named Sukhov has been fighting in the Russian Civil War in Central Asia. Just as he is about to return home to his wife, Sukhov is chosen to guard and protect the harem of a guerrilla leader. His task proves to be more difficult than he imagined.» (imdb.com)
