Exploring the changing feel of place, this paper offers a detailed account of the micro-politics of power at Smithfield Market, London which is about to undergo a dramatic period of transformation as part of the Corporation of London’s Culture Mile urban regeneration project.

Drawing on empirical research, we engage with the notion of atmospheres in order to provide a nuanced account of how unequal socio-spatial relations play out through sensory and temporal qualities in the everyday life of this area of the city. Our research shows how various social groups fix time in place at particular moments, in order to make particular claims over urban space and therefore highlights processes of inclusion and exclusion.

Following a brief discussion of the site, the paper highlights three temporal modalities of atmosphere: past, present and future and shows how visceral and imagined elements are central to their construction. The discussion explores how these modalities are experienced and made sense of to discuss the feel of place in and around the Smithfield Market area and the way in which they frame feelings of belonging.

This paper makes an intervention into debates on the politics of place by analysing how the variable interactions between sensory and temporal qualities produce particular atmospheric constellations.
