Malgorzata Stelmaszyk: Living the dream: shamanic crossings and climate crisis among Nanai in the Siberian Far East
This presentation is about the ways in which shamans undertake cosmo-political experiments as one of the strategies in navigating the current climatic crisis in the Amur region of Far East Siberia. It critically reflects on the ways in which shamanic practice is discussed in the context of environmental degradation via protest politics and/or explanatory paradigms confined to the boundaries of one cosmology and one rather than multiple forms of knowledge. Bringing together the agentive power of dreams among Nanai as intertwined with a dynamic collaboration between a shaman and an orthodox priest, it discusses the ways in which shamans engage in political ecology while materialising fragile connections between different pieces of onto-epistemic systems. Focusing further on the tensions that these encounters produce, the presentations provides an opportunity to reflect further on conceptual models addressing cross-disciplinary commitments in relation to climate change and the place of shamanic thought and practice within them.
