Now entering its 32nd year, Manchester’s biggest student classical music festival showcases a variety of ensembles and soloists over a four-day period. From big band to brass band, opera scenes to orchestral works, Estival promises something for everyone. This summer, the music of Bohuslav Martin? plays a particularly important role (we may be a year late in marking the 50th anniversary of his death, but he was somewhat overshadowed by Haydn’s 200th, after all). A selection of works by this prolific composer will reveal the diverse influences he masterfully absorbed, including those of jazz and the folk music of his beloved Czechoslovakia. Also featuring the music of Martin?’s compatriots, Estival’s Thursday night concert concludes with Janacek’s magnificent Sinfonietta, complete with 12 trumpets.
