China's art scene is one of the largest and most prolific in the world. This talk outlines the development of art in China in the past ten years. The discussion will include the cultural environment in China and its rapid expansion, the diversity of art practice and key themes in artists' works in relation to huge social and economic changes in China. In the past decade, the dramatic rise of teh art market in China has also led to major Western auction houses setting up in China. The talk will attempt to raise some questions about China’s positioning within the international art world and the particular challenges it currently faces.
