	                	A special guest lecture presented by the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (www.mahsc.ac.uk).
Professor Umberto D’Alessandro, Director of the Medical Research Council (The Gambia) and Thematic Lead for Disease Control & Elimination, will deliver a lecture on Malaria in The Gambia followed by a question and answer session.
Professor D’Alessandro is a leading expert in malaria, and a clinical epidemiologist with specialist training in public health.
He has worked extensively in Africa and Asia, including The Gambia, where he led the evaluation of the national bed net programme for 3 years, and ran a clinical trial; into a malaria vaccine in Basse.
At the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, he set up the Unit of Epidemiology and Control of Parasitic Diseases, before returning to The Gambia in 2011 as Theme Leader – Disease Control & Elimination at the MRC’s The Gambia Unit, because, as he said, ‘I wanted to go a bit closer to the field’.
