Maps, magic and the Manchester Geographical Society: working with colonial collections at the University of Manchester Library
Join us at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library for a number of presentations which explore the nature of colonial collections and the stories they reveal about empire and imperialism. There will be an opportunity to discuss the issues around working with these collections and to network with researchers and library practitioners.
List of speakers:
Dr. Brian Wallace is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, working on technology and magic in nineteenth-century imperial encounters. His general research focus is the cultural history of imperialism, and his latest article, ‘All England Was Present at that Siege’: Imperial Defences and Island Stories in British Culture, was published in the History Workshop Journal last year.
Dr. James Watts is a Lecturer in Public and Creative Histories at the University of Bristol. His work looks at the intersections of Britain with its empire in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is particularly interested in travel writing, depictions of landscape, and the domestic interest and support for empire.
Dr Inbal Harding is a Curator (Diversifying Collections) at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library. Some of her recent work has focused on the process of inclusive cataloguing, using glass lantern slides from the Manchester Geographical Society as a pilot project.
Donna Sherman is a Curator (Map Collections and Manchester Geographical Society Printed Collections) at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library. She has worked with the map collections for over ten years and is also a Trustee of the Manchester Geographical Society.
