The world is now witnessing a spectacular rise in entrepreneurship involving technologies, such as mobile phones, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, geospatial information systems and social media. On the other hand, governments all over the world (particularly in Low and Medium Income Countries) are facing severe resource constraints in their development. Although many Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) are working hard on various development projects in a number of social sectors (e.g., health, education, disabilities, poverty alleviation, environment etc.), there is substantial scope for technological innovations and their deployment for sustainable development.
This talk is based on the recent book (2022) “Technology Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development (eds. Pradeep Ray and Rajib Shaw)”. The book discusses the role of technology entrepreneurship in various sectors, such as education, well-being, climate, environment and disaster management. The talk will present technology innovation and entrepreneurship from the perspectives of university education and multi-disciplinary research.
Pradeep Ray is the Founder of the Centre For Entrepreneurship (CFE 2017) at the University of Michigan Joint Institute in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. This Joint Institute is the only campus of the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) outside USA. Pradeep designed and launched the Minor in Entrepreneurship program in UM-SJTU JI. He founded an international event called Entrepreneurship Week (since 2018) with the co-sponsorship of the largest international professional body IEEE. The UM-SJTU JI has a research focus on Technology Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development (TESD). Pradeep has been the founder Director (2013-2016) of the WHO Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) on eHealth at the University of New South Wales (UNSW)-Australia where he is now an Honorary Professor in the School of Population Health, UNSW Medicine. He was a co-founder of the Yunus Social Business Health Hub at UNSW (2015) in collaboration with Yunus Centre led by Prof Md Yunus, a Nobel Laureate.
