Join us for an exciting event where Lord McFall will discuss options for reform of Parliament’s Upper House, to enhance the effectiveness of its work of scrutiny and revision of legislation as well as its capacity for addressing the long-term challenges facing the UK. This in-person event will be held at University Place, Lecture Theatre A.
Lord McFall of Alcluith is the Lord Speaker of the House of Lords. He is the 4th Lord Speaker since the post was created in 2006 and was elected in 2021.
Prior to becoming a Peer in 2010, he was MP from 1987-2010 for Dumbarton and West Dunbartonshire and served as chair of the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee.
During his speeach, he will set out his belief that the unelected nature of the Lords allows it to draw on expertise and experience from all parts of UK society, not only political parties but also sectors like academia, science, medicine, law, religion, the arts and charity.
He will argue that, for the House to perform its tasks, it is vital that voices from all parts of the United Kingdom are included in its membership and will consider whether reform is needed to achieve this goal.
