The Pedagogy Development programme is led by Dianne Burns and ensures that all those contributing to Faculty programmes can engage with sound pedagogy and share best practice in teaching, learning and student experience. It is based on four key areas that align with the University's Teaching, Learning and Student vision and Faculty Strategy for Teaching, Learning and Students which are each split into three segments that make up the development framework that is fondly known as the "Wheel". We encourage all those involved in teaching activities across the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health to take part in the programme, including those from our education partners in the NHS, Industry and other workplace settings.
Our learners contribute to planning content for the programme and the ethos is one of transformative learning; that is, learning as an active and life-changing process that requires educators not only to challenge learners’ thinking but also be prepared to engage critically and develop their own practice.
In this session you will be introduced to the future strategy of our university in terms of flexible learning in the transnational space. More than merely an extra arm of the University, TNE is gaining in significance as a more sustainable and equitable way for our University to assure access to our transformative education across barriers and borders; when, where and to whom it matters most. Our world remains an intolerably unjust place for many, and access to a life-changing programme of education is often (and blindly) linked to one’s country of origin, visas, income, capital, and even politics. While we may strive to shift this narrative, we typically do so with those already empowered and already in a ‘better place’. TNE at Manchester addresses these imbalances directly by taking education to the world, rather than following the traditional ‘obstacle course’ approach common to most Universities in our context.
The affordances of online and blended learning are many, not least the power to reverse the enormous carbon footprint generated by thousands of students flying in and out of the UK multiple times a year to study. Instead, we fly a small number of academics to our compact centres in Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore, effectively cutting this carbon load by a factor of scores, if not hundreds. Our programmes are developed using constructivist pedagogy, designed by team, not alone, with significant human resource support from TNE specialists. Our students are supported by professional staff who are specialised in helping people who are far away from the university. Our programmes are known to be innovative, with highly diverse student cohorts reflective of the globe in its entirety, not just one part of it. TNE courses are notable in many ways, and these are recognised as award winning.
